Museum of Breath.
Inside the Wymering Manor, the potential place of Breath is everywhere! It is conspicuous in its absence. The ethnographic artifacts are far away from the places, uses, times and the people that made their existence. Glass-eyed, silent, inanimate; the objects in the display cabinets almost appear to be holding their breath.
So, This museum of breath is an alternative guide to the number of collection items found in the Wymering Manor and its communities. This guide situates each object in relation to a fictional scenario. The written texts act back upon objects as much as objects illustrate the texts.
This project explores the relationship of object to text in museum display, with syncing breaths to form a rhythmic vibration and highlighting the primary of text in framing and making meaning for museum objects. (1) (2)
My proposal for the future of Wymering is The Museum of Breath. This is what I tried to portray in the art above. It is a juxtaposition of my ideas derived from the text above. It first starts off with the Wymering manor burning away into the past with all the lost identities. I then hold onto it with my thread of ideas onto a blank canvas of an infinite number of possible ideas.
I tried to portray my idea of the museum of breath where people experience the manor through different smells. Inspired by some Olfactory artists like Otobong Nakanga (3)and Christophe Laudamiel (4) who try to evoke human emotion through smell, I propose to do the same, but through the lense of objects from the manor itself.
